Narrative- storyline/ plot

Genre- Thriller? Horror? Romance?
Representation- how are the characters presented?

Planet of the Apes 1968

three men set through space and end up in futuristic earth where apes rule over illterate and mute humans who are their slaves. one of the men from the past survives and escapes the apes with a futuristic woman but then they discovered the statue of liberty half way in the sand- the statue was erected to represent peace between America and France and with that half buried it represents that the peace has been lost. it is dystopian as it is set in the future but also an adventure because they are discovering new places. the humans are represented as insignificant compared to the statue of liberty that seems to be at the forefront of the scene.

The camera shots show that the man is more dominant than the woman but they are both insignificant in the world they are in. the man kneeling on the ground symbolises how the animals have more respect and power than him. the way the man is banging his fists against the ground represents how he has adopted to the new world- he is acting like an ape where the apes are acting like humans.

Camera Shots used:
-long shots
-close ups
-panning

the man is at the centre of the shot when kneeling down to show the focus point.

a high angle long shot is used when overlooking the statue of liberty, framing the shot.

an eyeline shot is used when looking at the statue of liberty; this shot foreshadows that we have blown humanity up with an atomic bomb.

it ends on a cliffhanger, keeping the attention of the audience to send the message that we need to be careful otherwise this is what our future will look like.

the man is presented as weak and powerless- brought him to his knees.

he is in the middle of a desolated beach which presents him as lost and isolated.

it can be interpreted as a romance due to the presence of a man and woman on a horse but when the man drops to his knees it presents itself as more of a drama.

it is post-apocalyptic (after we wiped ourselves out)- it can be linked to a cycle of reverting to the stone age.

atmosphere is shown as emptiness as the long shot used allows the audience to see the desolation of the beach.

there is a symbolisation of hopelessness as the statue of liberty has been destroyed.

it has been given a naturalistic edge to make it look more believable to present the message more effectively.

Tilt: a vertical pan- moves up and down.

Pan: moves horizontally side to side to follow the action or show previously unframed space. they can be done at different speeds to gage the right reaction from the audience.

Steadicam shot: they are used for motion tracking shots- shot from one point.

Focus on point: relationship between focus and lense.

Shallow focus: narrow depth, sharp, clear, subjectivelly

Zoom shot: middle of shots- depends whether it is closer or further away as to what it emphasises.

Rocking focus: focus on scene or character- blurred or clear.

Rate: 24 film clips per second- frames added to slow down sppeds if less than 24.
