Characters are a device to move the story forward
heros have to go through a symbolic death- the hero's journey- morality
setup >> development disruption >> (positive) resolution
cause and effect- something causes something to happen
Donkey Kong Game
3rd person as we were watching the character on his quest to save the princess. he overcomes all the minions of the villain and jumps the fireball which is the obstacle in the quest. actions/events are linked in a chain of cause and effect- donkey kong kidnaps princess so mario goes to save her.
Mario Game
human centres as a portrayal of emotions is emphasised in a quarrel between princess and mario that wouldn't usually be seen for these cartoons. built on opposition and conflict as they have differing interests in the quest- mario wants a kiss but princess does not and is just grateful for mario saving her. driven by desires as the protagonist, mario wants a kiss from the princess>>unconventional. driven by own benefit rather than wanting to just be the hero. princess saying "no" is the disruption between mario and the princess. no resolution as she gets eaten by donkey kong.
Batman clip
it is built on opposition and conflict as batman had a goal to beat the joker however seems to sway from the usual acts he is expected to do. verisimilitude because batman and the woman were able to survive the fall from aten story building onto a car. joker is a psychopath- has connections which isn't usually plausable. extreme so believeable due to the genre- objective because it was shown through other people's perspectives. set up was slightly dramatic - excessive set up. anti-hero because he is mentally sick due to the fact his parents died
Classic Hollywood Narrative
-simplistic/ predictable
-3rd person perspective- cause and effect
- characters are agents of the narrative (purpose of story)
-psychological motivation of characters desires
-strong resolution- opposition and conflict
narritive sometimes overlaps with genre
hero's journey: equilibrium > disruption > resolution
Totalitarian - the government contorls everything about your life >> V for Vendetta
restricted perspective - don't know anymore than the characters do.
Editing and Narrative- Rocky
one man was training in a gym and the other was training in a natural environment
3rd person perspective is shown through the flicking between the two men training
the men are agents of telling the story
nature over technology >> rocky is the force of nature
juxtaposition between the two characters
man in red is a russian communist and is arian- he is surrounded by trainers and scientists to build his athletism
V for Vendetta domino effect scene
Why is this scene significant to the story? analyse
it shows the effects of V's plans- giving disguises to the people of London but also the detective realises what V is going to do and why. it's piecing together the story for the audience- the final planning before the ultimate revolution.
How does the editing position the viewer? plot. perspective. characters.
this scene is filmed from many different perspectives: V starting the domino's, Evey when she is looking at the half finished 'V' symbol by a child etc. this helps us empathise with the different characters of what each one is seeing. Majority of the time we are a 3rd party viewing onto the scene for example when one of the detectives in the government open the box to reveal the disguise and especially when he is explaining that everything is making sense to him- he starts piecing together the puzzle.
Relationship between the characters? motivations.
it is revealed to the audience about V's desire for revenge due to the experiment many years before. Evey is now V's wingman and helps him with the final pieces of planning that need to be completed. It shows that the people of London are on V's side as they start grafiting his symbol over London- they want the freedom.
Does it conform to the characteristics of Classic Hollywood Narrative? Which ones? Why?
he is evey's boss- he does the show where he makes the chancellor out to be the man behind the mask of V- is the beginning of V's recognition throughout London.
the people of london are being controlled by the government and want freedom so are easily manipulated by V's justice speech.
The man on TV feeds the people what they are to believe to keep them in line for the government- he controls their beliefs and thoughts.
Evey is there to finish V's work- his wingman. she is manipulated by V for his own selfish revenge plot on the government and anyone that was involved in the experiment.
