notes

Dialogue performs two different roles
- moves the story along
- characterisation - gives them personalities/ psychological motivation

What does the dialogue reveal about the characters?
Stephen is allowed freedom of speech and uses sarcasm in the quote "yeah, I miss you like I miss a rock in my shoe" and the quote "hello my ass" - isn't offended by himself saying the word "nigger" - he is comfortable
Calvin candies is confident, outspoken, arrogant, he's in charge of the scene "my boy" - he owns him -
"Do you understand that" >> orders << slavery "who's that nigger"  - incredulous
Django has worked hard to move himself up the ranks and does not want to be downgraded by the word nigger yet again but by him name

"Slaver" and "my boy" >> time period - racism

What is the purpose of this scene?
Conflict between the characters to drive the story

What does it establish?
Blaxploitation >> black sub culture

Power in the scene is shown - Django is on a horse where Stephen stands on the floor which shows Django is higher up and therefore has more power

Mr candy talks to Stephen like he is a dog - patronising - talks to him like a child
Mr candy owns Stephen
Mr candy is confident as he allows Stephen to have his own thoughts and opinions - he's the master so speaks for him
