section b
cinema in context- financial/ economic

films are not there for entertainment but to make money
but
can also be an artistic exploration

social context
sense of entitlement to watch tv shows and movies on the internet
having the access to films on the internet allows us to watch movies and get more ideas- film literate
social influence to watch movies online >> "everyone does it"

star wars and jaws broke the mould
star wars is the archetype for science fiction films

production is everything involved in making a film

marketing is the promotional things they do before the movie is released- hype

speilberg and george lucas are the well known directors of the 80s/90s

NOTES - MIND MAP

notes

Summer blockbusters are the same thing over and over again- the use of CGI and the lack of a storyline means that everything appears to be very good on the forefront but if you wanted to look at it in further depth there would be nothing there. new ideas are now spurring off from independent films which hollywood is now starting to pick up on but do not stray from their formula so that the audience ratings are decreasing over the years. most summer blockbusters are now high concept movies which means they are being hyped up before hand so as to intrigue the audience and make them want to watch it. however they are usually reboots, sequels and prequels which means it is the same storyline being spread thin to make another excuse for another film. for example there is now an amazing spiderman 2 which is a prequel to the amazing spider man- it is being hyped up now for the release soon but it is the same thing again- nothing new- this film alongside many other blockbusters use 'star' actors and actresses that are well known and already have a fan base for the film and the celebrities meaning there is more of an interest for the audience to watch the films.

notes

high concept movie is an event film that is hyped up so people will watch it - jaws was one of the first movie to create this high concept- lack of shark in trailer which intrigued viewers to see it

big dumb movies uses a high concept technique to create money

Robocop is a reboot and lots of visual effects which means it fits within the criteria

high concept are mainly blockbusters

mark kermode criticise concept movies as transformers due to the style over substance theme<< usually known to be in all blockbusters

best summer blockbuster
-inception

worst summer blockbuster
-transformers

cinema is now dominated by these types of films due to the production companies following suit to a certain avenue of which got high ratings from the public. however also the new use of CGI being the new cool thing to use in a film which meant that pretty much all producers wanted to include this technique and based their stories around that main aspect leading to the result of 'style over substance' in majority of current blockbuster films

notes for half term work

characteristics of a blockbuster
good versus evil theme
main character having to face a major problem
dominant character fights against the other character showing obvious conflict
lost, love, war, fear, life and death, family and honour are all dominant themes
examples: jaws (fear and death), top gun (honour), pearl harbour and saving private ryan (war, honour)

high concept films
the global appeal in a film such 'the perfect storm' includes things like the main issue that is accessible to all, weather, global warming, love story, however the film brokenback mountain is about gay cowboys which does not fill the cinemas
culture neutral so it does not offend anybody and assumes no cultural knowledge
love interest in a film: love universal, sex sells, romeo and juliet is a famous story, love against the odds
simple characterisations mean that it is straightforward, easy to understand, uses stereotypes and therefore does not mess with the stereotypes
save the world
CGI big production pyrotechnics
visual vs dialogue

What qualifies a film as being a flop at the box office?
Doesn't earn back more than it's budget
What qualifies a film as being a success in the box office?
Has to make double it's budget
Similarities: Fantasies, Science fiction, Sets to be made- not set in today's world, CGI, Hollywood, franchise (business), pre existing fan bases, big names - stars, heavily advertised, formulaic- CHN
Advertising can be equal to production budget or half of the budget

Why are Hollywood films so formulaic?
Everything has already been done and if to make a new idea it would be so obscure which would be a big risk which means they might not get the profit back from the demographic- can't afford the risk
Piracy means an unfair result on what film are popular
The companies are so amazed by CGI and the huge fan base they got out of it that it means they use that as a distraction from the storyline

If it is computer animated which means it is easy to steal

3D brings people back into the cinema

People nowadays can read reviews

The context that affects the making of and the getting out there of and the experience of watching cinema

1975-2014- films in the UK

Opinion >> argument

Half term: half term homework: prep for mock exam 1 week 1
Task 1, task 2, task 3, task 4
Case study- advertising, marketing and promotion
Record review of film- pitch version of next blockbuster

Film flop formula????
A list star
Not a comedy
CGI- eye catching visuals
Needs to make double the amount the budget was
Needs a newsworthy budget

Comedy and horror films have lower budgets
Remakes that cost more does not mean that the audience will enjoy it more

Apply to blockbuster release

Track the film flop formula in the film

Justify the influence

A listers salary and VFX are a big expense of money

The more people that go to the cinema = success

X men
Changed actors and actresses of certain characters
Brought in more stars
High budget scenes are included in the trailer

Jaws
Doesn't show the shark

Hype is the link between the trailers
