Notes

Characters are a device to move the story forward

heros have to go through a symbolic death- the hero's journey- morality

setup >> development disruption >> (positive) resolution

cause and effect- something causes something to happen

Donkey Kong Game
3rd person as we were watching the character on his quest to save the princess. he overcomes all the minions of the villain and jumps the fireball which is the obstacle in the quest. actions/events are linked in a chain of cause and effect- donkey kong kidnaps princess so mario goes to save her.

Mario Game
human centres as a portrayal of emotions is emphasised in a quarrel between princess and mario that wouldn't usually be seen for these cartoons. built on opposition and conflict as they have differing interests in the quest- mario wants a kiss but princess does not and is just grateful for mario saving her. driven by desires as the protagonist, mario wants a kiss from the princess>>unconventional. driven by own benefit rather than wanting to just be the hero. princess saying "no" is the disruption between mario and the princess. no resolution as she gets eaten by donkey kong.

Batman clip
it is built on opposition and conflict as batman had a goal to beat the joker however seems to sway from the usual acts he is expected to do. verisimilitude because batman and the woman were able to survive the fall from aten story building onto a car. joker is a psychopath- has connections which isn't usually plausable. extreme so believeable due to the genre- objective because it was shown through other people's perspectives. set up was slightly dramatic - excessive set up. anti-hero because he is mentally sick due to the fact his parents died

Classic Hollywood Narrative
-simplistic/ predictable
-3rd person perspective- cause and effect
- characters are agents of the narrative (purpose of story)
-psychological motivation of characters desires
-strong resolution- opposition and conflict

narritive sometimes overlaps with genre

hero's journey: equilibrium > disruption > resolution

Totalitarian - the government contorls everything about your life >> V for Vendetta

restricted perspective - don't know anymore than the characters do.

Editing and Narrative- Rocky

one man was training in a gym and the other was training in a natural environment

3rd person perspective is shown through the flicking between the two men training

the men are agents of telling the story

nature over technology >> rocky is the force of nature

juxtaposition between the two characters

man in red is a russian communist and is arian- he is surrounded by trainers and scientists to build his athletism

V for Vendetta domino effect scene

Why is this scene significant to the story? analyse
it shows the effects of V's plans- giving disguises to the people of London but also the detective realises what V is going to do and why. it's piecing together the story for the audience- the final planning before the ultimate revolution.

How does the editing position the viewer? plot. perspective. characters.
this scene is filmed from many different perspectives: V starting the domino's, Evey when she is looking at the half finished 'V' symbol by a child etc. this helps us empathise with the different characters of what each one is seeing. Majority of the time we are a 3rd party viewing onto the scene for example when one of the detectives in the government open the box to reveal the disguise and especially when he is explaining that everything is making sense to him- he starts piecing together the puzzle.

Relationship between the characters? motivations.
it is revealed to the audience about V's desire for revenge due to the experiment many years before. Evey is now V's wingman and helps him with the final pieces of planning that need to be completed. It shows that the people of London are on V's side as they start grafiting his symbol over London- they want the freedom.

Does it conform to the characteristics of Classic Hollywood Narrative? Which ones? Why?

he is evey's boss- he does the show where he makes the chancellor out to be the man behind the mask of V- is the beginning of V's recognition throughout London.

the people of london are being controlled by the government and want freedom so are easily manipulated by V's justice speech.

The man on TV feeds the people what they are to believe to keep them in line for the government- he controls their beliefs and thoughts.

Evey is there to finish V's work- his wingman. she is manipulated by V for his own selfish revenge plot on the government and anyone that was involved in the experiment.

Comparative Analysis of Children of Men vs. V for Vendetta

The dystopian films, ‘Children of men’ and ‘V for Vendetta’ give us a message- this is what could happen in our future; they symbolise hope for a better future. In ‘Children of men’, this hope is when Kee is found to be pregnant, whereas in ‘V for Vendetta’ this hope is, V who gives the people of London a voice.

‘Children of men’ is Theo’s journey for justice. The style of London is portrayed through bleak colours, enhancing how the absence of children leaves everyone unhappy and reckless. The characters wear dark clothes; Kee’s clothes are the only presence of bright colours- she is the hope for the people of England. The camera shots are close ups and mid shots which give a personal level to the film; the shots are different lengths to keep the audience engaged. ‘V for Vendetta’ is through many view points: Evey, V, the people of London, the police and the secret service; allowing the audience to understand how the different lives coerce. The dark lighting creates a hopeless atmosphere; however the brightly coloured theme to V’s lair conveys that he is the one to bring the freedom. London is the location used; the cleanliness of the streets gives it its unique style. The shots are filmed from different heights, distances and angles to gage the right reaction from the audience.

On the subject of narrative, in ‘Children of men’, Miriam and Kee have a close bond like family; Theo and Julian divorced after the death of their son, Dylan through influenza; Theo is the only person Julian can trust which is why she hires him to join the protection in the terrorist group. The terrorists crave more power so set up the death of their leader so they can manipulate Kee; Theo believes makes sure he will get Kee and her baby to the human project. During a gun fight the baby’s cries are heard, silencing everyone; the elders remembering the hope and joy it brings. Theo’s death leaves Kee by herself whilst the human project’s boat draws nearer, leaving it on a cliff hanger. But, in ‘V for Vendetta’, Evey and V are unknowingly attracted; V is reluctant to give his identity up but finds companionship with Evey; his hate for the government fueled by his past is his drive for giving the people a voice. The secret service does not want to be over ruled so kill V, but in the process are murdered by V, giving automatic victory to the people of London. V makes Evey empathise his past by putting her through the same capture and torture process he had to endure; it is a traumatic experience but she is thankful for the courage it gave her. At the end of the film the people are gathered round parliament wearing V’s attire as disguises, whilst watching the fireworks they remove their disguises which represent their freedom and a better future for everyone.

‘Children of men’ shows London in the futuristic theme of 2027 where humans have been infertile for the past 18 years and London is at a rack and ruin in dirty colours; immigrants are being killed or deported, smog fills the atmosphere, the people are unhappy through the absence of children. There are wars raging and terrorist organisations forming; the world is now a kill or be killed place due to the fight for world dominance. There is absence of medicine so people are dying- the size of the population is rapidly diminishing. Whereas in ‘V for Vendetta’, the government rules. There is a yellow-coded curfew by 10pm- they will be arrested if the rule is not followed; people have to live within strict regulations and are speechless- they are told what they are allowed to believe and say. Fascism is presented by a TV presenter who expresses how he loathes terrorism, immigration, homosexuality etc, enhancing how they are fed what to believe.

The message ‘Children of men’ portrays, is if we do not reproduce, we will lose respect for everyone due to absence of family; children keep the adults respectful, this communicates that if we continue as we are this is our future. Conversely, ‘V for Vendetta’ emphasises if the parliament gets too much power we will be speechless and controlled like robots; giving the impression that rebellion is best. The story is based on the 1605 gunpowder, treason and plot; V uses this scenario to overrule parliament and give the people a voice and freedom.

Sequel to independent film Black Swan- script

Black swan sequel

Speech for blog:

I am going to be talking about the plot to my sequel of Black Swan. So this is my idea.
The death of the former Swan Lake Star has left the dance academy in shock. A private investigation is started up to figure out what caused this catastrophe. A new student from across the states enrolls into the school and due to the fact that she lives far away, she would not of heard about the latest catastrophe in the dance academy, therefore they accept her on the proviso that she will not be scared or weary to join. However secrets don’t stay quiet for long as the new girl sees investigators roaming the premises. Due to her need to know personality she starts snooping upon the crime scenes and eavesdrops on their conversations. She catches onto what the investigation is and tries to find out as much as she can about Nina Sayers. Upon snooping, she discovers something that must have been missed by the professionals- but the discovery shocks her and scares her beyond belief. Keeping it a secret she starts to piece together the puzzle of clues and facts she finds, but the final finding is what makes the picture clear. She doesn’t know what to do. So she confronts the man behind it all.

Notes

Fast and Furious

man in black car is trying to look intimidating- due to camera shot man in black car is bigger than man in orange car.
Director made this deliberate shot to make the audience empathise with the man in the black car.

black car is made to look more powerful by different height- masculinity/ alpha male

both men are trying to prove a point so there is masculine rivalry so neither are willing to back down

so proud that they beat th train, they are not aware of surroundings. man in black car instigated race so the destruction was his car. he was wiped out by nature to allow younger aggressive man to take over.

crumpled black car represents how the man's ego is broken. man in black car said at the beginning of race, 'go for green' yet he crashed into a green truck- he got what he was going for- what he deserved

orange car is sleeker and newer where the black car is older and has more work done to it- could represent man as a person- lots of experience and practise.

man in black car is wearing a white t-shirt which connotes purity- this could represent that he is hard and mean on the outside but soft on the inside; shows why he is scared towards the end of the road before the train.

refelection of orange car in the door of the black car which could represent what the man in the black car used to be and what the man in the orange car is going to be.

the man in the black car is pushing the old engine to its limit which represents how he is trying to push himself.

worried about the outcome but male ego gets in the way by wanting to prove their masculinity.

Terminator Title Sequence

symbolises humans like vermin and the aliens are killing us off like we with vermin>> human running and taking shelter in a tunnel underground

the size of the skulls are big due to the close up camera shot implying that death is nearer than the aliens to death at this point in 2029 A.D.

the land looks barren, dead and destroyed which conveys that it is already looking like an unbeatable force of power.

the dead tree is close to the camera which shows how we are the cause of the destruction; we created technology so superior to us that we have brought it on ourselves.

the main colours were blue and black which is usually associated with the thriller theme. it conveys a space- out of the world movie showing that it is a sci-fi film.

the shadows wmpghasise darkness and destruction as well as where humans could be hiding. soome of the camera angles make the audience feel as if they are a human hiding out and watching.

Notes

Narrative- storyline/ plot
Style- Gothic? Crime? Mystery?
Genre- Thriller? Horror? Romance?
Representation- how are the characters presented?

Planet of the Apes 1968

three men set through space and end up in futuristic earth where apes rule over illterate and mute humans who are their slaves. one of the men from the past survives and escapes the apes with a futuristic woman but then they discovered the statue of liberty half way in the sand- the statue was erected to represent peace between America and France and with that half buried it represents that the peace has been lost. it is dystopian as it is set in the future but also an adventure because they are discovering new places. the humans are represented as insignificant compared to the statue of liberty that seems to be at the forefront of the scene.

The camera shots show that the man is more dominant than the woman but they are both insignificant in the world they are in. the man kneeling on the ground symbolises how the animals have more respect and power than him. the way the man is banging his fists against the ground represents how he has adopted to the new world- he is acting like an ape where the apes are acting like humans.

Camera Shots used:
-long shots
-close ups
-panning

the man is at the centre of the shot when kneeling down to show the focus point.

a high angle long shot is used when overlooking the statue of liberty, framing the shot.

an eyeline shot is used when looking at the statue of liberty; this shot foreshadows that we have blown humanity up with an atomic bomb.

it ends on a cliffhanger, keeping the attention of the audience to send the message that we need to be careful otherwise this is what our future will look like.

the man is presented as weak and powerless- brought him to his knees.

he is in the middle of a desolated beach which presents him as lost and isolated.

it can be interpreted as a romance due to the presence of a man and woman on a horse but when the man drops to his knees it presents itself as more of a drama.

it is post-apocalyptic (after we wiped ourselves out)- it can be linked to a cycle of reverting to the stone age.

atmosphere is shown as emptiness as the long shot used allows the audience to see the desolation of the beach.

there is a symbolisation of hopelessness as the statue of liberty has been destroyed.

it has been given a naturalistic edge to make it look more believable to present the message more effectively.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What different types of cinematography are is picked up on/

Whip pan: quick pan that momentarily blurs the image- usually used in action movies.

Tracking Shot: follows the character or action across the set to make audience feel they are moving with the  action- camera is usually mounted on a track or dolly.

Tilt: a vertical pan- moves up and down.

Pan: moves horizontally side to side to follow the action or show previously unframed space. they can be done at different speeds to gage the right reaction from the audience.

Steadicam shot: they are used for motion tracking shots- shot from one point.

Focus on point: relationship between focus and lense.

Shallow focus: narrow depth, sharp, clear, subjectivelly

Zoom shot: middle of shots- depends whether it is closer or further away as to what it emphasises.

Rocking focus: focus on scene or character- blurred or clear.

Rate: 24 film clips per second- frames added to slow down sppeds if less than 24.

Framing: adding extras- characters- objects.

Notes

Gone with the Wind Trailer

ripped atlantan flag (not completely ripped)- shows that their hope has been slightly lost as they have been damaged but are still intact.
high angle shot slowly zooms out revealing more of the scene of injured soldiers. the camera pans with the woman so she is constantly in the middle of the shot. she could be representing the hope or purity that is still present in their country.

Inglorious Basterds Pub Scene

Narrative: the nazis are in mid second world war and are relaxing in the pub yet there is still an air of tension and hostility

Genre: action film because of iconography of guns and presence of Nazis, yet comedy that is because of the unseriousness of the intense matter

Style: historical symbolism

Representation: masculinity through the guns but when they hold the guns under the table it implies homoerotic

Message: redemption and revenge throughout the war

Angle: eyeline shots to make it more personal and the audience empathise the situation- make them feel they are involved

Shot types: close ups of the faces of the men to show intense conversation. shot under table where men are holding guns- phallicimagery

Movement: quick shots from person to person to show different vantage points of the fight and scene

Focus: zooming into the faces of the men to emphasise the seriousness of the situation- tension around them, coveying the emotions of the Nazis

Framing: Nazis were placed in centre of shot to emphasise plot

Notes

V for Vendetta

Narrative and representation through camera shots and angles:

evey is small infront of the fireworks- she is powerless to stop the events that are to unfold: the shot looking over her shoulder but from a low angle symbolises this as the fireworks appear huge and menacing in the darkness of the sky that could represent the evil of London in that day and age.
Chancellor on screen is huge conveying that he is in control and the superior power over London. The eye-line long shot shows the men small as if they are the minions of the man on screen.
There are individual close ups of the men to show that they each have their own important role to play in the story.

close up of Vis to show that he is important to the story. he's the protagonist/ antagonist. he's the anti-hero. he's the vigilante. he's a terrorist. he wants a revolution- for the freedom of the people. anonymous  due to the mask he wears. he's an anti-hero: he's the villain yet because he's the main character we are rooting for him. he is cheerful over the chaos he is causing. slightly psychopathic.

the government is a dictatorship which is why we are automatically against them. the secret service  are known as 'fingermen' who are controlled by the chancellor to sort out any individuals that do not follow the laws and customs they set out for the people. creedy is the leader of the secret service out in the world but is still under the power and influence of chancellor sutler- however at end of film he double crosses the chancellor as he kills him. creedy appears out of the darkness showing he is surrounded by evil. high angle shot allows the audience to see that creedy is in-superior to the chancellor.

v has blown up a building and secret service are covering it up with a fake story to hide the truth from the public. evey has been automatically associated with v as his accomplice as he saved her from being raped by the fingermen; secret service are looking for her as a lead to discover and arrest v.

the audience sees the story from evey's point of view; this can be shown through the camera angles and shots used throughout the film which influence the audience to empathise with evey.

compartmentalisation- allude what they know and understand
UK- dictatorship

Voyeurism/ Identity- male point of view (male gaze); female point of view (identity)
mirror stage- identity/ aspiration

evey has shaved her hair off- taking away her femininity: no fear
evey in child prostitute outfit- sexual object

v uses emergency channel to broadcast to the people- knows it is the only way he can speak to the people. people's homes are introduces where they are watching the TV.

close up shots on army to show that they have a power and order to kill V.
close up on V- has the upper hand in the situation.
low angle shot over shoulder of man in government- shows that in this situation V has more control and that he is listening. eyeline shot over shoulder of the boss shows that he is on the same level of thinking as V.
everyone is watching.
