A prequel is usually an explanation of the back story of characters or narrative links.
Sequels May or may not be based on original source material but incorporate the characters and general setting of the original movie or novel.

Why do films need an iconic moment?
The memorable moment in a film that links to the other movies that makes the audience remember the movie and makes them want to watch prequel or sequel

What is an iconic moment?
A memorable moment

Three examples?
- the alien in alien
- darthvader in Star Wars
- gollum in lord of the rings/ the hobbit

National identity thesis

V for vendetta reveals a dictatorship fascist totalitarian government that rules through the device of fear; which is how they got elected in the first place- by planting a disease that only they could cure. This futuristic British government is much like its binary opposite: Germany using the same brute force like the nazis to rid the world of anyone they saw unfit and who didn't conform to their rules and regulations by using them in an experiment. Their flag is similar to that of the nazis flag which reinforces the idea of turning themselves into our worst nightmare.

National identity

National identity in children of me and v for vendetta are represented in slightly different ways; in v for vendetta it is ruled under a fascist dictatorship government where chancellor sutler rules through fear. In children of men the government communicates with it's society through advertisements which play on the people's desire to live longer. This is mainly done through the mise en scene and editing.

For example in v for vendetta Britain is now it's binary opposite taking on the role of its enemy Germany with the flag that looks like a nazi and a leader that thinks he is doing things for the better of the people when in fact he wants a society he can control and anyone that does not submit or conform is killed.

Also there is a similarity with the way people are taken away when they do not conform to the rules and regulations of the government; in children of men this is the hippy woman getting black bagged when standing up to a police officer to protect kee where in v for vendetta Dietrich is black bagged for making a mockery out of chancellor sutler on his show saying he was behind the mask of v.

Furthermore the segregation of people that are not accepted into the dystopian society are made to be known in both films; in v for vendetta these are all the people like homosexuals, terrorists, transgenders etc that are put into an experiment to make a superior race that can be an army controlled by the government where in children of men the immigrants are treated like animals, huddled into cages and lined up to be shot.

Female identity

Female identity in children of men and v for vendetta are represented in different ways through different micro aspects such as mise en scene specifically casting and costume. Shows women in masculine roles. Hippy lady in children of men is motherly and masculine in strength. Evey shaved head and wears male clothing to make her masculine role.

Traditional femininity vs post masculine feminists
Evey is fighting with v with shaved head and roses in background which is yonic imagery gives sense of independence. Scene where she leaves v- he's a fatherly role and she is the stroppy teenager.
Contradiction to Hippy woman defending kee- so kee is vulnerable and cannot stand up for herself.

Traditional feminity
Evey is in child prostitute outfit and is sweet and vulnerable which conforms to stereotypical female identity. Male gaze/ voyeurism. Evey holds power.
Kee is pretty much naked revealing pregnant is  belly. Conforms to stereotypical female identity.

Post modern femininity
Evey holding up arms in rain after torture is portrayal of independence>> reborn
Kee is now independent and looking after baby now that theo is dead.

Notes

V for vendetta is Hollywood
Children of men is indendent

V for vendetta conforms to superhero comic story
Children of men is like a documentary so relatable

V for vendetta is style over substance
Children of men is messages over visual experience

Both are sci if thrillers

Narrative
Escape from dystopian future. V for vendetta is a rebellion over the government. Children of men is a story of a baby giving hope and a revolution

Themes
Dystopian future
Style: CoM realistic
V is more comic book
Reason: warning- style makes it more realistic (genre)

Although similar themes v has elements of a comic book where children of men is conforming to a thriller. Both thrillers. Both science fiction films. Sub genre: dystopian sci fi.
Which conforms more to sci fi genre? V for vendetta due to superhuman abilities
Set in future so gives a warning.

Narrative
Neither film follows classic Hollywood narrative- no resolution
-theo dies which gives clouded resolution
-v has a clear resolution
-v is both protagonist a and antagonist- does not follow the hero's journey ( terrorist/freedom fighter)
-v is manipulating everyone (domino scene)
-evey follows hero's journey (is reborn after torture)
-follows layout of beginning, middle, end and has clear identifiers as to who the hero, heroine and villain are
-subvert (undermine/ rebel against) expectations
-narrative reflects the government's manipulation and character's feelings

MACRO representation apply to CoM and v

Representation

Notes

Genre determines which audience it is targeted at

V for vendetta and children of men are thrillers because of the mystery within the storyline but also the rebellion of countries fighting back against the government and the gun, cars, eery music and dystopian themes

Genre changes over time

Most films fit into more than one category and are known as hybrids

Trailers and posters are important for the audience to know whether they like the film or not

They have expectations of the film

Not "RON" means it hasn't done what it should've done and leaves a dissatisfaction

The directors like to change up the genres slightly e.g the wolverine

The genre is like a recipe for a film- it makes sure you follow the conventions
Conventions: things we have to stick to

2 groups:
-audience
-producers

V for vendetta is Hollywood film
Children of men is independent film

Casting of the character is quite important as it immediately tells the audience the rough storyline- usually a certain actor that is associated with a type of movie/ character

Genre heavily effects the genre

C
Apply concepts of genre to v and children of men
Key scenes in my opinion demonstrate the conventions
Collage of key scenes by still images

B
Genre from a critical perspective
Compare to what extent the films use their genre

A
Which one conforms to the genre more than the other and why
What do they say through the genre
Why are they using this approach

Comic book movies
Give people goose bumps and make them feel bad ass deep down

Sin city
Looks as if it was taken straight right out of the comic book pages-adaptation
Broke a lot of ground for visual effects and stylistic filming
Black and white movie with pops of colour
Three story lines
Sexy doctor who got her arms cut off

Teenage mutant ninja turtles original
Grill style movie
Not over lit
Dirty and nitty gritty

Zac Schneider used the good looking actors again
Quite dark and gritty

Xmen 2
Characters come together and fight side by side

Nicholas cage is a famous actor that brings a famous face into it

V for vendetta
Dialogue is smart and clever- well thought out
Surreal
Very believable
Slowly but surely
Natalie Portman brings the inspirational segment of the movie
V is a symbol and gives everything

Batman trilogy
More than comic books-evokes emotions and true depth
The joker kept the dark knight movie together
Batman begin's origin story made the first half investigate the criminal mastermind part
The dark knight rises- batman was challenged by a real threat

Major themes in sci fi films
Science
Social concerns
Technology
Rationality
Politics and ideology
Humanity versus science
Uptopia and dystopia
The future

Sci fi is a very formulaic genre due to the fact that many of the narrative themes are repeated; it has proved flexible and popular enough to embody different fears at different times

Sci if has included different genres then rely heavily upon such as action adventure films where others have aspects of horror, zombie or thriller elements

Rise of the planet of the apes
Try to make apes more clever by injecting a drug that increases intelligence
V for vendetta
The government try to make a superhuman race that they can use in warfare by injecting a drug that boosts the strengths of humans
These two films use the idea of science to start the backstory

The matrix
Working against the world rulers. Superhuman abilities in fighting and saving others.
V for vendetta
Working against the government. V has superhuman abilities that gives him the upper hand in majority of the film

Star Wars a new hope
The rebellion. Darth vader wears a mask and full body disguise so his identity is unknown. He manipulates the people to get what he wants. Luke leads the winning act against the villains
V for vendetta
Rebellion against the government. V wears a mask to disguise himself and manipulates the people to get what he wants. Evey sends the train off to blow up the government which is the winning act.

Tron 2
A world we don't live in. Kill or be killed. It's a game- no longer.

Walle
Set in the future- message to the people. Lonely but the finally meets a companion. Could be in love. Save for the human race. Technology should not be left in charge.

V for vendetta
Fight for revenge

Superhero genre
Sacrifice to save the world
Sense of rebirth

Dystopian sci fi genre
Rebellion/ uprising
Superhuman abilities
Survival

Genres contain different conventions

What happens when the barriers between genres collapse/loose integrity?
Hybrid

Children of men can be viewed as a sci fi as it contains the theme: social concerns
here are scenes that show children of men as a sci fi

uprising

this clip shows how the terrorists are rebelling against the government- it is known as the uprising scene as they are finally in action of fighting back and have stolen kee and the baby to use them as a symbol of force.

survival- hope

this clip shows how people are fighting for survival- the baby's cries signal for the firing to stop which portrays how the baby gives the people hope, maybe for a better and more hopeful future but also that we can keep reproducing as it will mean the survival of the human race is under way

message-this is our future
this opening scene is very sad as the youngest person alive has died and all the older generation are grief stricken from this news. it is saying to the audience that this is our future if we continue as we are. people have no hope and are in fear of the next bad thing to happen.

Children of men

MACRO
-narrative
-genre
-themes
-messages
-representation

MICRO
-cinematography
-lighting
-sound
-mise en scene
-editing

Ending scene:
Lighting is dim and murky creating a sense of calmness yet danger leaking behind the scenes
Sound builds sadness and the sound of the sea and the quiet around them shows that they are in the middle of nowhere and emphasises reality
Editing is long clips that emphasise the facial expressions of each character
Cinematography

Suggested sequel:
The boat coming along is not the human project but a random boat that spots kee in the water and helps her aboard. The baby is a surprise and they have sudden hope that the world is turning around and the future will be better. Kee finds out that the boat men are just like the terrorists she ran from apart from one that she gets close to and helps her escape from the group of men when they reach land. Obstacles come along like baby trying to get taken away.
Struggle for people to realise the joy in the birth of a baby rather than what new power they can have

Murky and grey colours- the world has been polluted like the people have become infertile- reflection and representation of society
Style emphasises atmosphere

Characters have more to their personality - reality/ morality  >> good parts and bad parts

Doomed woman - Julian
Ingenue/ damsel in distress - kee
Rake/ tragic hero/ Everyman - theo
Wise man - jasper
Secret identity/ town bully - Luke
Sidekick - Sid

When comparing the two films look for differences AND similarities

V for vendetta: Problem caused by government
Children of men: Problem caused by human development- infertility

The way it is shot is almost like a documentary which makes it more believable as we are empathising through Theo's eyes

V for vendetta almost Hollywood ending
Children of men cliffhanger ending
Both protagonists die at the end

Byronic hero: a proud moody and cynical man yet capable of deep and strong affection
Reluctant hero: a person who doesn't seek adventure or the oppurtunity to do good and often doubts his or her abilities to rise to heroism. However circumstances inevitably result in the characters becoming a true hero

Children of men could be portraying that women can be more powerful through their looks

What happens to Miriam?
What happens to kee?
What happens to Sid?
What happens to the gypsy lady that can't speak English?

1) human centred: individual characters are the casual agents of the narrative; narrative centers on individual choices, action, decisions, or problems
>>The characters were acting more self aware like humans rather than being the role that they were given

5) is dominated by clear and complete motivation of actions and events
>>

Does children of men conform to the CHN?
No because it does not have the clear start middle and end>> it does not come to a resolution as it is left on a cliff hanger. The characters have more in depth elaboration to their personalities- they can't neccessarily be put into the good or bad category as they are more realistic as they have both good and bad parts to their personalities just like normal people. There is a background story that has pros and cons and different views it can be seen from

Children of men starts equilibrium- due to the movie being portrayed through Theo's perspective the disruption is his ex wife dying

Narrative
Make sure key scenes interlink with similarities or differences

What is a video essay?
-CHN
-Characters
-post modern narrative(?)
5 key points
-narrative plot outline
-clear resolution
-characters
-stock characters
-opposites problems and challenges good vs bad
Title: to what extent does children of men and v for vendetta conform to CHN?

Children of men is more about message than entertainment where v for vendetta seems to want to balance the entertainment and message

Children of men is an independent film shot by a foreign director

What are the conventions of dystopian sci fi?

Machines/ technology
War
Murky lighting
Fire explosions
Fast paced action
Robots
Machines vs humans
Deserts and underground bunkers

Improved technology
Brain improvement technology to do with memories
Built up cities
Magnetic cars with streets 30 metres off the ground

Total recall is more like v for vendetta
Terminator salvation is more like children of men

Comparison between V for Vendetta and Children of Men

Themes:

Point 1: hope

V for Vendetta:

Children of Men:

V for vendetta hope is the revolutionary speech as he is the leader of the rebellion that sets the events in motion for overturning the government force- he makes them realise that they have been submissive and oblivious to the manipulation of the government and V opens their eyes. He is their hope.
Children of men hope is kee's baby as no one has been pregnant for the past 18 years and then kee becomes pregnant which gives people hope that the world is changing into the past again where people are happy and have families. The baby is their help.

Point 2: terrorism

V for vendetta:

 Children of men:

V for vendetta shows the first terrorism scene when v blows up the old bailey which is the main theme that is emphasised.
Children of men shows the first terrorism scene when the terrorists kidnap theo and then out him under interrogation and then reveal their identities

Notes

Children of men
Style of shoot is to emphasis the warning and make it seem realistic

Prequel or sequel to one of the films >> independent is the best

Usually 9 key frames and script
But can do a scene now >> 2 minute sequence
Has to be disruption scene or ending
NOT beginning
Have to write story and then focus on one scene

Vid 3:
MACRO- narrative or style
Narrative because it has main plot, lead up and effect
Style because lighting, sound, editing shots>> blueish tinge, match on action, bird sounds, eery music >> starts with this
MICRO- cinematography or lighting
Trying to follow structure that we recognise>>not done very well. Others are trying to challenge + explore
Camera shots give more of an ambiguous meaning (double meaning)
Set in graveyard>> usually associated with horror >> supernatural - stererotypical association
Has a death but no blood, slime, cuts, or anything to signal cause of death

Doesn't follow it very well so is harder to identify
Didn't have a hypothesis/ thesis

Watch both the films i am studying for coursework again!!!!!

Notes

What MACRO?

Vid 1:

Style
-edited together for match on action >> slow motion >>blurred effect
-the lighting is emphasised >> exposure increased
-angles > high and low << cinematography

MICRO aspects have been used to emphasise the visual style

Hypothesis that can be used for this: 'Style over substance'

No narrative due to lack of dialogue
Doesn't have any messages and values
Not really anything represented
Not many aspects to emphasise the genre

Vid 2:

Narrative
-it tells us the story through his journey
-could have been influenced by 'The Hangover'

Hypothesis that can be used for this: 'how the restricted narrative contradicts The Classic Hollywood Narrative'

Aesthetic>> the way it looks

The bright lighting can be interpreted as a dream state>> another realm/ state of mind or being
>> hyper reality.
Helps decipher reality from other things e.g. Hangover, high, supernatural, flashbacks, dreams, visions, memories etc.

Notes

Culture Eats Itself
- it is formulaic
-ideas are churned out from previous ideas>> no film is original

appropriation >> most insidious things in existence >> destructive

Independent Films >> controversial, radical and newer for example 'now you see me', 'the host', 'mortal instruments', 'the hunger games'

Demographic:

Hybrid films are more common; this is because it makes it more interesting for the audience and it means there is more aspects that can be broadened upon

Django 1966 >>> Django Unchained 2012

Django unchained was a remake targeted at the modern audience to make an old storyline appeal to our day and age by using famous actors. this was another movie to be made.

Bourne Identity 2002 >>> Cowboys and Aliens 2011

Bourne Identity influenced the basis of Cowboys and Aliens by the fact that both begun with the main protagonist having amnesia and going on a quest to uncover the knowledge and past behind his existence.

American Pie 1999 >>> Superbad 2007

American Pie was the turning point in this genre of movie as it influenced films like Superbad and The Inbetweeners. it is on how the younger generation live and present themselves in modern society but majority of these types of movies are from a male's perspective- it is almost the man version of the woman's 'chick flick' / 'rom com'

Children of Men- MACRO: Genre

Children of men genres:
-adventure
-sci-fi
-thriller
Mood Board on Genre

Stock characters from the genre?
The protagonist/ action hero in this film would be Theo as the film is portrayed from his perspective and it is his journey but he can also be seen as the protector of the heroine, Kee as terrorists want to use her baby as a force of power over the government. Julian can be seen as the damsel in distress as her terrorist group were working against her and she was theo's ex wife. Luke is the lead terrorist and is trying to manipulate Kee for her baby so is the lead antagonist in the film.

To what extent is this a thriller or a sci-fi?

-it is a thriller because of the suspense and action like war and terrorism that are main themes within the genre; there are police in reinforced armour patrolling the streets 24/7- it causes conflict and disagreement which is usually associated with this genre.

-it is a sci-fi as it is set in the future society of 2027 which is supported by the advertisements in the streets that are not presently legal, for example a pill to take your own life and for it to be illegal to not attend fertility tests in this futuristic setting. there is new technology within this film such as the speedometer as a in the bottom right hand side of the windshield.

Enigma Code and is this satisfied?

At the end of the film it is left on a cliffhanger as to whether Kee reached or was rescued by the Human Project or not. It keeps the audience intrigued up to the end and are left unsatisfied as they are not told the rest of the story- it is up to the audience as to what the ending is.

Thesis: To what extent is this a thriller or a sci-fi? justify why it blends in (include verisimilitude)

Children of men messages and ideas

Children of Men messges and ideas

This scene conveys that children give people hope and something to live for-they would stop the violence if it means having the joy of family once more.

This scene shows that in the eyes of society in 2027, youmg people were seen as a miracle and idiolised as it is the only special thing that the world had left.

This scene highlights that through thirst for power people have lost respect towards each other; power is all the people have to work towards in a life of terrorism and when they have not lived to see a child they do not know or even understand the hope and joy it should bring.

This scene establishes that if we do not reproduce then the lacknof children in the world will result in a place likethis where it is either kill or be killed as there is no understanding for moral attitudes and respect towards each other- we will lose our lifestyle.

Stylised Dialogue

Stylised dialogue is the way in which writers write a script for their film. It mainly depends upon the genre, era and place it is set as to what the script would be but it is a device in a way in which it can recieve the right approval from the audience but is also used to highlight the when and where of a film. It can also be used to convey the characteristics and traits about a certain character so that the audience can empathise with the person on screen. Even though people do not use this kind of dialogue in every day life it can usually be used in a sarcastic way or even in a derogitory fashion but overall it is an almost unused language in modern day life. However, in the televise world it is used for the means of the narrative or a way in which to portray the characters.

For example, Romeo and Juliet is wrote in shakespearean language due to the way in which shakespeare wrote his plays in the victorian era of which it is based upon; an example of a piece of stylised dialogue in this film would be, 'where art thou romeo'.

On the other hand in a film like Django Unchained it is wrote in a westernised sort of speech, an example of a piece of stylised dialogue in this film would be 'shiiit negro'- this was used to make an effect on the audience by emphasising the character's traits.

Django Unchained- stylistic dialogue

'shiiit negro'
this type of dialogue is known as 'stylised' as it is used for effect- it isn't usually used in real life circumstances. it is used as a way to emphasise the character's traits.
from this clip we can tell that he is comfortable with his race and almost being ironic about it due to the day and age of which this film is set. the blood on his collar could indicate that he has just had a bloody battle with someone which is usually stereotyped with this kind of character back then. by using the word 'negro' it shows that he is used to the term and not easily alarmed or effected by it- it shows that he is around white people alot. his suit connotes that he is been to an important meeting- it could show that he is higher up in the heirarchy system among white people more so than other black people maybe giving him status and authority over other black people. it shows this derogitory term is not offensive to him but he almost takes the mic out of white people for thinking it would make them feel more lowly than them.

Female Identity, Male Identity, National Identity

female identity

national identity

male identity

What significant examples of gender roles (mother/father/strength/power) in the characters?
In the male identity Swede, Dietrich is shown to almost be Evey’s protector/ father figure when he shows her his secret room where he can ‘be himself’ – this intrigues Evey and it is almost as if she looks up to him for guidance which could later stimulate her rebellious behaviour out in the open. When Dietrich is taken away it shows his strength is much less than the government but his bravery at sacrificing himself for Evey even though he has less power than the government- this could be symbolized when Dietrich is getting black-bagged on the floor with the government services pinning him down showing their authority in London. The strive for more masculine roles in this Swede is shown as the Chancellor is still trying to keep his ownership over the people when they start to go stray. There is a scene where it shows chancellor Sutler’s face projected on to a huge screen facing the men in the secret police, there is a long shot that shows Sutler to be a huge presence on the screen whilst the men are mere small silhouettes in comparison- this shows Sutler’s power over everyone.
In the female identity Swede Evey is shown to be vulnerable and weak- which stereotypically women are seen to be. She is defenseless against the Pope who is within the walls of a corrupt religion- it shows the Pope in a twisted way that would usually never be thought of, yet he has all the power within his chambers as the doors are locked and no government guards will enter. However, when Evey tries to tell the pope that V is planning on killing him, it shows her caring side at anyone getting hurt, including those that are planning on hurting her. When V enters it represents him as a father figure as he is protecting Evey from harm. His stance and body language convey his strength and power as a terrorist as he is under no one’s control- free to do as he pleases against the government.
In the national identity Swede, it shows chancellor Sutler talking to the people of England through their TV’s- it shows he is the manipulation tool to keep the people of London under control. It also explains how the government planted a virus into local schools, tube station and at a water treatment plant- they left it long enough for the people to be in fright until they brought out the cure; this meant the people thought that they were the best ruling system for their country and were blind to the wrong doing of the government as they only saw what the government wanted them to see. The mass of people dying came to a standstill.

How does the film use it's stock characters - why?
The film uses the stock characters as a device to tell the story- whether it is through the eyes of Evey or V the audience is manipulated to empathise with either side, ignoring their terrorism and psychotic parts of their characters- V is an anti hero but as the audience is seeing it partly through his eyes it is made to seem to be in the right and not in the wrong.

How does the film represent Dystopian Britain as a nation and does it follow film stereotypes?
Dystopian Britain in V for Vendetta is a dictatorship, territorialism government that does not give the people their individualism. The film differs from usual stereotypes of future Britain as other movies like ‘back to the future’ have made it seem much more technology based and ruled by cults and rich people rather than under the rule of the government.

What messages is the film trying to get across through its representation of gender and nation in these scenes?
It is giving the message that what makes us individuals today will be taken away from us as it will be against the law, we will have to conform to a way of life and lose our voices in the world and succumb to orders given to us on how to live our daily lives- no questions asked. It is also saying that if we let the government have too much power it will corrupt religion and society and this is what will happen in our futures.

Psychoanalysis - what Yonic or Phallic imagery does the film have in these scenes and what meaning can you read into this?
In the female identity Swede, V holds a sword that penetrates the Pope when he stabs him; this shows the masculine power held in the hand of V.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and 4321

How is the thriller genre presented differently in these films?

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is set back in the day of 1947 and is male dominated, it has mystery and detective work happening whereas in 4321 it is modern day with mixture of male and female adolescents but has more fast paced action chases occurring.

Essay

Essay

Thesis:
The dystopian political based thriller, V for Vendetta presents a fascist, totalitarian and dictatorship government that is ruling over the futuristic setting of London where people’s identities are repressed.  Revenge is a strong theme in this film; all the plots are for their own personal gain; V and Evey both want revenge- V due to the part people played in his suffering of the experiment and Evey because her parents/ her life was ripped away from her, yet by achieving this they hide behind the fabrication of freedom for the people to hide their own behaviour and actions. The government is a symbol of their loss which they want to destroy but by doing this they save society from the oppression and rules that stifle the people.

Theme 1: Fascism
Message 1: the government dictates what people are to believe- it could happen in our society if we let it happen
Scene: opening scene
Analysis: the cinematography presents the man with a close up shot, which shows his power over the people, and that he controls their beliefs- shows they do not have an individual identity but a conformed one.

Theme 2: Revenge
Message 2: the end justifies the means; there is a right for violence to get freedom
Scene: when he kills the woman scientist
Analysis: these idioms present how the audience is made to believe what v is doing is a good thing- he has a secret agenda where he kills the people that played a part in his suffering during the experiment by only allowing society to see what he wants them to see: freedom. The mise en scene conveys the use of a red rose as representation for his revenge.

Theme 3: Revolution
Message 3: freedom of the people- to make a difference and not be enslaved by the government’s rules and regulations
Scene: the end scene
Analysis: the cinematography presents the enormity of the citizens uprising compared to the army that the government control- the government are no match. V made it possible for the people to make a stand. The close ups on individual faces show how important this was to the people- to get their identity back.

Theme 4: Media manipulation
Message 4: it is a force of power to oppress the people and dictate the beliefs
Scene: chancellor sutler’s speech and v’s speech
Analysis: the government control the stream of media into the people’s homes – used this to gain control over the people by using disease as the weapon against anyone who weren’t straight, white and Christian. V used the media as a force to get the people to listen to him and his plans for the next 5th November where he plans to blow up parliament- it is used to manipulate. Both government and v are villains in their own right and use this to get what they want.

Theme 5: Oppression
Message 5: homosexuality is wrong to the corrupt religion ruled by the government
Scene: experiment and when Dietrich is taken away
Analysis: the people have to be Christian, white and straight otherwise the government take them away and harm them with no trial. Art is a form of the identity that they took away from the people; some hide it in their homes- v steals artwork from the government, which symbolises how he is against them, and represents how he is the hope for the revolution.

Conclusion:
The film presents a range of themes that convey how the government rules people’s identities and lives to conform to their own regulations so there is no chance of a revolution, however v changes this as he is the face of the uprising- he is the hope for the people in the darkest time. It represents how the government rules by fear and propaganda that influences them to look the other way if anything out of line happens. The main plot to the film is the revolution and how the strength that the people can build when they come together can win against the evil. There are no heroes in this film; they are all villains- V and the government kill people, Evey blows up parliament due to the fact that they took her parents from her. The motives of this film are personal and the people killed are a tragic accident for the cause of ‘good’ in their eyes. In some ways what v does it good as it frees the people but his motives for doing this are based on a hatred that boils deep inside him because it all he knows.

Notes

Four types of Narratives:
-omniscient: this is where the audience knows everything about the film and characters. example: silence of the lambs
-restricted: the audience only knows what the character knows. examples: the sixth sense and shutter island
-linear: the films have a clear start, middle and end.
-non-linear: use flashbacks to throw audiences off track.

Enigma codes and their importance in a film
an enigma code makes the audience ask themselves questions throughout the film; it entertains the audience as well as the fact that it makes them feel clever.

Different Thriller genres
-conspiracy: usually include a heroic figure set around a business location and and usually includes a powerful organisation. examples: inception and shutter island.
-crime: usually include some sort of criminal offence- the main character would either be a detective or some sort of murderer. example: inside men
-disaster: main character is usually some sort of scientist- the story plots around a natural disaster where mankind are to blame.
-mystery: based upon a crime where clues are revealed to keep the audience guessing. similar to crime and detective. storylines are usually restricted. example: the sixth sense
-political: based around the government and prevention of war. example: V for Vendetta
-psychological: narratives are usually non-linear, based upon a character with a messed up mind. example: butterfly effect.

Notes

V for Vendetta

Theme= religion
Example= strength through unity; unity through faith
Explanation= religion is corrupt; it is used to obtain control and power over the people. They believe in God- they have faith in it.

Thesis- introduction

norse fire >> team of villains (government)

V is doing the same as the government- they are both manipulating the people without them knowing it.

"the end justifies the means"

"there is a right for violence to get freedom"

there is no hero-they are all villains:
-V is a terrorist
-Government is a dictatorship
- Evey has been brainwashed/ manipulated

Gender Studies
V's gender is unknown- other than his voice he has no other obvious gender specifier: he is covered head to toe in a unisex outfit
however he is seento have feminine activities such as cooking and dancing

evey is seen as feminine and vulnerable at the start of the movie- typical traits. Evey is seen to develop masculine characteristics after her torture at the mock prison camp as she does not care what happens to her and has lost her hair (feminine feature)  and does not dress feminine- sweaters and trousers

comparison between Evey and V through their reactions to the outside world after their reactions to the outside world after their torture > hands held up to the sky (V in fire- starts; Evey in rain- finishes)

the masks given to the people make everyone gender neutral so their identity is secret. It is a symbolism of them supporting V - masks protect his identity and their own

Marxism
Government is a fascist dictatorship >> media and cultural elements help the government keep their marxism control.

media is biased and is controlled by the government- people do not question the propaganda through fear. Lewis Prothero is the face of the media.

V uses the media to start his revolution- preaches freedom and democracy. knows the message will get out to everyone as the government has control over the media stream into people's homes >> typical marxist control.

artwork was banned by the government so the people could not form their own identity. not allowed it in their homes - however some people have it hidden >> V steals artwork from the government. repression of creativity makes them blindly follow the government.

Sutler is the high chancellor and is not seen in person at all >> mostly seen on screen so it gives a 'big brother' feel >> spying on the citizens of London.

Government is scared at the situation in England so try and control it as much as possible >> curfews to stop people being ale to have extra time in the day that the government can't control- so no one is allowed out their homes.

 Religious
-governmen distorts religion for their own control
-corrupt religious figures
-postcolonialism (dictatorship) imperialist in power

Themes in V for Vendetta
Hope
Fear
Revenge
Corruption
Post colonialism
Marxism
Gender Identity
Media Manipulation

Most important 5 Themes in V for Vendetta

Fascism- could happen in our society if we let it happen

Revenge- V's secret agenda is to get revenge

Media Manipulation- sutler used the media to gain control by blaming diseases caused on anyone who is not white, straight or christian

Revolution- citizens uprising

Opression- Gays and transvestites and people that are accepted now will lose their rights in the future

Revolution
End scene is an example of this as all people are overthrowing the army and Evey sends V off on a train filled with explosives to blow up Parliament.

Notes

Characters are a device to move the story forward

heros have to go through a symbolic death- the hero's journey- morality

setup >> development disruption >> (positive) resolution

cause and effect- something causes something to happen

Donkey Kong Game
3rd person as we were watching the character on his quest to save the princess. he overcomes all the minions of the villain and jumps the fireball which is the obstacle in the quest. actions/events are linked in a chain of cause and effect- donkey kong kidnaps princess so mario goes to save her.

Mario Game
human centres as a portrayal of emotions is emphasised in a quarrel between princess and mario that wouldn't usually be seen for these cartoons. built on opposition and conflict as they have differing interests in the quest- mario wants a kiss but princess does not and is just grateful for mario saving her. driven by desires as the protagonist, mario wants a kiss from the princess>>unconventional. driven by own benefit rather than wanting to just be the hero. princess saying "no" is the disruption between mario and the princess. no resolution as she gets eaten by donkey kong.

Batman clip
it is built on opposition and conflict as batman had a goal to beat the joker however seems to sway from the usual acts he is expected to do. verisimilitude because batman and the woman were able to survive the fall from aten story building onto a car. joker is a psychopath- has connections which isn't usually plausable. extreme so believeable due to the genre- objective because it was shown through other people's perspectives. set up was slightly dramatic - excessive set up. anti-hero because he is mentally sick due to the fact his parents died

Classic Hollywood Narrative
-simplistic/ predictable
-3rd person perspective- cause and effect
- characters are agents of the narrative (purpose of story)
-psychological motivation of characters desires
-strong resolution- opposition and conflict

narritive sometimes overlaps with genre

hero's journey: equilibrium > disruption > resolution

Totalitarian - the government contorls everything about your life >> V for Vendetta

restricted perspective - don't know anymore than the characters do.

Editing and Narrative- Rocky

one man was training in a gym and the other was training in a natural environment

3rd person perspective is shown through the flicking between the two men training

the men are agents of telling the story

nature over technology >> rocky is the force of nature

juxtaposition between the two characters

man in red is a russian communist and is arian- he is surrounded by trainers and scientists to build his athletism

V for Vendetta domino effect scene

Why is this scene significant to the story? analyse
it shows the effects of V's plans- giving disguises to the people of London but also the detective realises what V is going to do and why. it's piecing together the story for the audience- the final planning before the ultimate revolution.

How does the editing position the viewer? plot. perspective. characters.
this scene is filmed from many different perspectives: V starting the domino's, Evey when she is looking at the half finished 'V' symbol by a child etc. this helps us empathise with the different characters of what each one is seeing. Majority of the time we are a 3rd party viewing onto the scene for example when one of the detectives in the government open the box to reveal the disguise and especially when he is explaining that everything is making sense to him- he starts piecing together the puzzle.

Relationship between the characters? motivations.
it is revealed to the audience about V's desire for revenge due to the experiment many years before. Evey is now V's wingman and helps him with the final pieces of planning that need to be completed. It shows that the people of London are on V's side as they start grafiting his symbol over London- they want the freedom.

Does it conform to the characteristics of Classic Hollywood Narrative? Which ones? Why?

he is evey's boss- he does the show where he makes the chancellor out to be the man behind the mask of V- is the beginning of V's recognition throughout London.

the people of london are being controlled by the government and want freedom so are easily manipulated by V's justice speech.

The man on TV feeds the people what they are to believe to keep them in line for the government- he controls their beliefs and thoughts.

Evey is there to finish V's work- his wingman. she is manipulated by V for his own selfish revenge plot on the government and anyone that was involved in the experiment.

Comparative Analysis of Children of Men vs. V for Vendetta

The dystopian films, ‘Children of men’ and ‘V for Vendetta’ give us a message- this is what could happen in our future; they symbolise hope for a better future. In ‘Children of men’, this hope is when Kee is found to be pregnant, whereas in ‘V for Vendetta’ this hope is, V who gives the people of London a voice.

‘Children of men’ is Theo’s journey for justice. The style of London is portrayed through bleak colours, enhancing how the absence of children leaves everyone unhappy and reckless. The characters wear dark clothes; Kee’s clothes are the only presence of bright colours- she is the hope for the people of England. The camera shots are close ups and mid shots which give a personal level to the film; the shots are different lengths to keep the audience engaged. ‘V for Vendetta’ is through many view points: Evey, V, the people of London, the police and the secret service; allowing the audience to understand how the different lives coerce. The dark lighting creates a hopeless atmosphere; however the brightly coloured theme to V’s lair conveys that he is the one to bring the freedom. London is the location used; the cleanliness of the streets gives it its unique style. The shots are filmed from different heights, distances and angles to gage the right reaction from the audience.

On the subject of narrative, in ‘Children of men’, Miriam and Kee have a close bond like family; Theo and Julian divorced after the death of their son, Dylan through influenza; Theo is the only person Julian can trust which is why she hires him to join the protection in the terrorist group. The terrorists crave more power so set up the death of their leader so they can manipulate Kee; Theo believes makes sure he will get Kee and her baby to the human project. During a gun fight the baby’s cries are heard, silencing everyone; the elders remembering the hope and joy it brings. Theo’s death leaves Kee by herself whilst the human project’s boat draws nearer, leaving it on a cliff hanger. But, in ‘V for Vendetta’, Evey and V are unknowingly attracted; V is reluctant to give his identity up but finds companionship with Evey; his hate for the government fueled by his past is his drive for giving the people a voice. The secret service does not want to be over ruled so kill V, but in the process are murdered by V, giving automatic victory to the people of London. V makes Evey empathise his past by putting her through the same capture and torture process he had to endure; it is a traumatic experience but she is thankful for the courage it gave her. At the end of the film the people are gathered round parliament wearing V’s attire as disguises, whilst watching the fireworks they remove their disguises which represent their freedom and a better future for everyone.

‘Children of men’ shows London in the futuristic theme of 2027 where humans have been infertile for the past 18 years and London is at a rack and ruin in dirty colours; immigrants are being killed or deported, smog fills the atmosphere, the people are unhappy through the absence of children. There are wars raging and terrorist organisations forming; the world is now a kill or be killed place due to the fight for world dominance. There is absence of medicine so people are dying- the size of the population is rapidly diminishing. Whereas in ‘V for Vendetta’, the government rules. There is a yellow-coded curfew by 10pm- they will be arrested if the rule is not followed; people have to live within strict regulations and are speechless- they are told what they are allowed to believe and say. Fascism is presented by a TV presenter who expresses how he loathes terrorism, immigration, homosexuality etc, enhancing how they are fed what to believe.

The message ‘Children of men’ portrays, is if we do not reproduce, we will lose respect for everyone due to absence of family; children keep the adults respectful, this communicates that if we continue as we are this is our future. Conversely, ‘V for Vendetta’ emphasises if the parliament gets too much power we will be speechless and controlled like robots; giving the impression that rebellion is best. The story is based on the 1605 gunpowder, treason and plot; V uses this scenario to overrule parliament and give the people a voice and freedom.

Sequel to independent film Black Swan- script

Black swan sequel

Speech for blog:

I am going to be talking about the plot to my sequel of Black Swan. So this is my idea.
The death of the former Swan Lake Star has left the dance academy in shock. A private investigation is started up to figure out what caused this catastrophe. A new student from across the states enrolls into the school and due to the fact that she lives far away, she would not of heard about the latest catastrophe in the dance academy, therefore they accept her on the proviso that she will not be scared or weary to join. However secrets don’t stay quiet for long as the new girl sees investigators roaming the premises. Due to her need to know personality she starts snooping upon the crime scenes and eavesdrops on their conversations. She catches onto what the investigation is and tries to find out as much as she can about Nina Sayers. Upon snooping, she discovers something that must have been missed by the professionals- but the discovery shocks her and scares her beyond belief. Keeping it a secret she starts to piece together the puzzle of clues and facts she finds, but the final finding is what makes the picture clear. She doesn’t know what to do. So she confronts the man behind it all.

Notes

Fast and Furious

man in black car is trying to look intimidating- due to camera shot man in black car is bigger than man in orange car.
Director made this deliberate shot to make the audience empathise with the man in the black car.

black car is made to look more powerful by different height- masculinity/ alpha male

both men are trying to prove a point so there is masculine rivalry so neither are willing to back down

so proud that they beat th train, they are not aware of surroundings. man in black car instigated race so the destruction was his car. he was wiped out by nature to allow younger aggressive man to take over.

crumpled black car represents how the man's ego is broken. man in black car said at the beginning of race, 'go for green' yet he crashed into a green truck- he got what he was going for- what he deserved

orange car is sleeker and newer where the black car is older and has more work done to it- could represent man as a person- lots of experience and practise.

man in black car is wearing a white t-shirt which connotes purity- this could represent that he is hard and mean on the outside but soft on the inside; shows why he is scared towards the end of the road before the train.

refelection of orange car in the door of the black car which could represent what the man in the black car used to be and what the man in the orange car is going to be.

the man in the black car is pushing the old engine to its limit which represents how he is trying to push himself.

worried about the outcome but male ego gets in the way by wanting to prove their masculinity.

Terminator Title Sequence

symbolises humans like vermin and the aliens are killing us off like we with vermin>> human running and taking shelter in a tunnel underground

the size of the skulls are big due to the close up camera shot implying that death is nearer than the aliens to death at this point in 2029 A.D.

the land looks barren, dead and destroyed which conveys that it is already looking like an unbeatable force of power.

the dead tree is close to the camera which shows how we are the cause of the destruction; we created technology so superior to us that we have brought it on ourselves.

the main colours were blue and black which is usually associated with the thriller theme. it conveys a space- out of the world movie showing that it is a sci-fi film.

the shadows wmpghasise darkness and destruction as well as where humans could be hiding. soome of the camera angles make the audience feel as if they are a human hiding out and watching.

Notes

Narrative- storyline/ plot
Style- Gothic? Crime? Mystery?
Genre- Thriller? Horror? Romance?
Representation- how are the characters presented?

Planet of the Apes 1968

three men set through space and end up in futuristic earth where apes rule over illterate and mute humans who are their slaves. one of the men from the past survives and escapes the apes with a futuristic woman but then they discovered the statue of liberty half way in the sand- the statue was erected to represent peace between America and France and with that half buried it represents that the peace has been lost. it is dystopian as it is set in the future but also an adventure because they are discovering new places. the humans are represented as insignificant compared to the statue of liberty that seems to be at the forefront of the scene.

The camera shots show that the man is more dominant than the woman but they are both insignificant in the world they are in. the man kneeling on the ground symbolises how the animals have more respect and power than him. the way the man is banging his fists against the ground represents how he has adopted to the new world- he is acting like an ape where the apes are acting like humans.

Camera Shots used:
-long shots
-close ups
-panning

the man is at the centre of the shot when kneeling down to show the focus point.

a high angle long shot is used when overlooking the statue of liberty, framing the shot.

an eyeline shot is used when looking at the statue of liberty; this shot foreshadows that we have blown humanity up with an atomic bomb.

it ends on a cliffhanger, keeping the attention of the audience to send the message that we need to be careful otherwise this is what our future will look like.

the man is presented as weak and powerless- brought him to his knees.

he is in the middle of a desolated beach which presents him as lost and isolated.

it can be interpreted as a romance due to the presence of a man and woman on a horse but when the man drops to his knees it presents itself as more of a drama.

it is post-apocalyptic (after we wiped ourselves out)- it can be linked to a cycle of reverting to the stone age.

atmosphere is shown as emptiness as the long shot used allows the audience to see the desolation of the beach.

there is a symbolisation of hopelessness as the statue of liberty has been destroyed.

it has been given a naturalistic edge to make it look more believable to present the message more effectively.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What different types of cinematography are is picked up on/

Whip pan: quick pan that momentarily blurs the image- usually used in action movies.

Tracking Shot: follows the character or action across the set to make audience feel they are moving with the  action- camera is usually mounted on a track or dolly.

Tilt: a vertical pan- moves up and down.

Pan: moves horizontally side to side to follow the action or show previously unframed space. they can be done at different speeds to gage the right reaction from the audience.

Steadicam shot: they are used for motion tracking shots- shot from one point.

Focus on point: relationship between focus and lense.

Shallow focus: narrow depth, sharp, clear, subjectivelly

Zoom shot: middle of shots- depends whether it is closer or further away as to what it emphasises.

Rocking focus: focus on scene or character- blurred or clear.

Rate: 24 film clips per second- frames added to slow down sppeds if less than 24.

Framing: adding extras- characters- objects.
