"Film censorship is motivated by fears about technology and audiences" Discuss this statement in reference to the concerns about uncensored and unregulated video content.

We came to the conclusion through collecting ideas and points from different peers' essays that,

In the context of the 1980's, films on home video should not have been censored but regulation was and should have been enforced on films for the younger audiences. This meant that rather than the traditional views the government thought at the time. The fears specifically were motivated by the government's concern to protect the public from video nasties: images it thought were harmful and psychologically unnerving for certain audiences. Therefore they used moral panic to scapegoat their problems onto video nasties. The fear was not then about the videos and content being harmful but the fear that people would revolt against them.

When gathering information we found that although a lot of the points our peers made were similar. There was a contrast in arguments where some believed there should be no censorship whatsoever where the majority agreed with regulation for children. Therefore leading to our agreement with one synthesis made that was the structure for our thesis.

What factors led to the decline in town and city cinemas in the late 1970's and early 80's?

"Film censorship is motivated by fears about audiences and technology" Discuss this statement in reference to the concerns expressed about uncensored and unregulated video content.

led to the decline

Introduction
A combination of factors led to the decline in town and city centre cinemas but there are three main pointers: technological, economical and social reasons.
Teenagers have disposable income so have money to spend with friend through a socialising environment such as cinemas and due to the multiplex cinemas being built in shopping centres that are easily accessible through the motorway and have more attractions such as restaurants, arcades  and shops mean that a day outing can be planned around the entertainment available.
The development of VFX that was first displayed in Star Wars led to the making of the Industrial Light and Magic company founded by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
Multiplex cinemas replace flea pits due to the beneficial income because of the variety of films that will be advertised meaning a greater audience is brought to increase their revenue.

Production
Spectacle films are now being produced due to VFX and the formulaic value that they know will sell to the audience- Star Wars was produced in 1975 which changed the course of cinema down this avenue leading to more films such as E.T that conformed to the science fiction genre which was now a huge hit with the teenage audience. However due to the mass of the teenage audience that brought in majority of the ratings, it also brought in new types of films such as the disco era that was brought about making films such as Saturday night fever in 1977 which was to reassure the fact they would continue bringing this audience in.

Distribution
Piracy meant that American film studios were getting less revenue from the blockbusters being churned out which means they cannot afford to take a risk with a new creative idea for a film meaning the same formulaic films year in year out are being produced. This meant that American film studios had to cooperate with the new consuming preference of the audiences through the internet which led to the creation of Netflix and hulu so that people could watch movies online but still get money out of the audiences.

Exhibition
People were intrigued by the new all around better experience in the multiplex cinemas that they would pay slightly more money for, in comparison to the dilapidated flea pits. Due to the fact they were located in a shopping centre meant there were many more things to do within walking distance of the cinema- this meant people went on a 'day out', taking it for granted rather than saving up and treating it as a special occasion like the older generations usually do. this meant that the american film studios were making many films to keep the revenue and ratings flowing into the cinema.

quiz

21st Century DevelopmentsName: __Anna Tyler_____
Fill in the circle beside the correct answer
1.What genres Films does 3D suit?
Action Blockbusters << as these films usually have a lot of special effects and spectacle which can be made to look effective in 3D. also hollywood has the money to make a film in 3D if it wants to so these are the films that are usually most popular in 3D cinemas

2.Did the UK digital cinema network succeed in exposing audiences to more varied types of films?
Yes << as £12 million scheme allowed audiences to view a wider range of films in their local cinema, it also meant independent film studios were able to distribute their films into the cinema

3.Why has the film industry lost money from cinema attendance since 2000?

illegal piracy << as the audiences are able to watch films for free online it means they watch lots of films online and do not go to the cinema anymore

4.Is 3D successful in getting audiences back in the cinema?
Yes << people are brought into the illusion of new experience and want to watch the films in 3D as it is different

5.Does 3D have a negative impact on film production?
Yes << because it means the production companies are creating a film to centralise around the 3D aspect rather than focus upon the storyline and depth to the film, which means it is mainly spectacle
No << it means that they are able to bring in more money through making their films in 3D as it increases cinema attendance meaning they get more money
6.Which directors support 3D in their productions?
James Cameron << james cameron directed avatar which was released in cinema in both 2D and 3D.

7.What reasons were given by the FBI shutting down Megaupload?

Breaching intellectual property copyright << it meant that they were sharing their own copies of the movies online which then meant people could access films freely which meant it was property copyright but because it was through the internet it is known as intellectual property copyright.

8.How has film distribution online/digital cinema helped Indie films get exhibited?

Cheaper to get into cinemas << due to the scheme funded by the national lottery it made it cheaper for independent production companies to get their films into the cinemas

what i need to do

Contact longfield to use premises
Get actors
Get costume

I have chosen longfield as my location as it looks futuristic and clinical on the inside and could be easily  used to make a hospital scene.

further planning

This story is set in the dystopian location in England, a woman is in charge due to her beauty and her powerful demeanor and leadership skills- men cannot be in charge due to the genetic defect they carry which means that when men turn 17 they have to go in for testing (as that is when the genetic defect becomes 'live') to contribute to the science project at trying to eradicate the defect. However, the government that rule is a Scientology government that use science as their power over the people- they have invented a device that they insert into the brain of a person to control them- zombify them- all the rejects (the men that cannot be cured and the women that are infertile) are zombified to be used as the army. Women are used to continue the generations- almost like a breeding farm- that is their only use in life so when women turn 17 they have to go in for fertility testing. 17 is when the ovaries activate in a woman in this dystopian world. There are stories made about what happens to the rejects - that they become zombies- no one realises how accurate this is. Quinn turns 17 and has to go in for testing. This is where the revolution is started from.

Quinn is the rebellious one that starts the revolution because she is in for her testing and turns out she is infertile- these women are usually handed over to the government straight away for the zombifying device to be inserted into their brains but she breaks free and escapes because she has heard the rumours of what happens to those who are. She does not want to be a part of those rumours and therefore starts a cause where any rejects group together and then fight back.

Disruption scene idea

There are two queues: one queue is of women and the other men down two separate hallways. Lighting is bright yet eery. Both men and women are dressed in the hospital overalls, barefoot and naked underneath apart from pants for the men and knickers for the women. Quinn is third down the line. The tension in the air is palpable as they all wait their turn. Some women come out happy and unscathed with a small plastic bag where others do not return. Quinn is called into the lab, everything is clean and stark white- there is a blonde nurse in blue overalls and a mouth cover mask. Quinn lies down and stares at the ceiling as tubes are inserted and wires are attached to her body. The beeping of monitors along with the rustle of the nurse's overalls and Quinn's harsh breathing emphasises the almost deafening silence that this room in cases. A red light flashes in the corner of her eye after her ovaries have been tested on- she looks up panicked at the nurse in question as to what her result is. A small almost imperceptible shake of the head is all Quinn needs. She starts struggling in her restraints. The nurse reaches for a syringe with clear liquid in it- she taps the side so some of the liquid squirts out the top of the needle as she approaches Quinn and reaches for her arm. As she comes close Quinn head butts the woman and the nurse falls backwards. Quinn manages to free herself from the leather restraints securing her to the operating table and looks around frantically like a deer caught in headlights. She bursts out of the room startling the women left in line- an alarm starts going off and she looks to the source of the sound- a camera on the far wall. She grabs something nearest to her and throws it at the camera. Everyone looks at her startled at the outburst. She runs to the exit of the building and keeps running.

script? maybe....

further exploration of idea

2014 – Normal....

Significant event – Pollution levels etc....

Dystopian – what has happened
People allow experimentation on them???? Don't they have a choice-----
Life or death situation – requires human experiments

Genetic defect – that requires human experiments......... ?????? FRIDAY ?????
Survive experiments but not the same – zombie-like - compliant?????? MEN carry the defect.....

Generations importance of women in breeding out the genetic defect.... more babies more pure = farming. Women don't carry the defect???? MAKE BABIES – exploiting

Artificial babies...

Revolution – doesn't want to make baby....

Woman in power – normal???

get to a certain age and expected to make the children

questions life- why does she have to do this – she should have a choice- joins the cause

Disruption or Resolution?

resolution will be easiest to film due to the fact it will have less aspects to involve within the scene

location for script

These pictures are out on the fields of the leigh academy grounds- the hill will allow me to make it look like they are looking out at something below

My alternate location would be the hill in darenth park as it is really high up and looks over fields and housing estates so when it is darker it should look pretty good as when the sun sets- if the camera is from the right angle it should look quite effective

treatment

Quinn, and five freedom fighters stand in a line on a hill overlooking the land they just fought on- she is in the middle
There are 12 squadrons altogether and they are the only ones left

Description of scene
Long shot with slight low angle with squadron standing on hill with sunset in the background- them looking out at the horizon as if looking towards their future. Camera zooms in till they frame the shot. Shot from front, light shining on their faces
Quinn in middle, brother on her right

Quinn: it's over

Dean: kinda unbelievable don't u think

Carla: it's weird feeling this much relief but what do we do now?

Quinn: we move forward! We change things, make the world fair, make laws that are just, we let the memory of the other squadrons live on- they did not die in vain

Vick: your call quin - you're the one that got us here

Quinn: I wouldn't have been able to do this by myself- you know that. I needed each of you for your skills, your company and you're my friends - we all made this possible together

Ronnie: you are like a sister to all of us of course we'd stand by ur side

Dean: she's my sister

Quinn: ok guys let's go

All look to the horizon and walk

treatment 2

The dialogue is sounding quite stoic at the moment but I cannot seem to be able to think of enough ideas to make a monologue type speech for Quinn to say whilst they look out at the horizon

Ideas:
About the battle
The people they have lost- think about who they were

pitch

two minutes creative artefact

The resolution scene idea seems the most possible because it would be the squadron overlooking the desturction of the world and it seems it would be the easiest scene to be able to film to a good standard.
I could use a green screen or change the idea slightly and film them on a hill looking to the horizon with the sun setting.

idea?

Lead female protagonist
Strong
Doesn't conform to typical stereotype
Rebellion???

Spinoff of the hunger games

Government is science based group
Lead female is the squadron leader of freedom fighters
Prize for their bravery but there is an alternate motive

notes

2 minutes
Page per minute of screen time for the script
Cannot make the opening
Make either disruption or resolution
If making sequel best to mak resolution as the iconic moment links to the next movie

Creative interpretation is heavily influenced by two films studied

Record elevator pitch- quick pitch- 30 seconds

independent film vs hollywood film choice

FILMS TO CHOOSE FROM:
-The inbetweeners movie
-The hunger games
-Stormbreaker
-I love you Phillip Morris
-Derailed
-Push
-Knowing
-Twilight
-the escape plan
-mortal instruments
-the host
-now you see me

THE HUNGER GAMES + MORTAL INSTRUMENTS << THE ADVENTURE GENRE << REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN <<cannot use mortal instruments as it was produced by constantin film produktion which is the leading independent german film company
or
THE HUNGER GAMES + THE ESCAPE PLAN << THE THRILLER GENRE << GO IN WITH THE INTENTION TO COME OUT WITH THEIR LIVES<<cannot use escape plan as it was produced by summit entertainment which is an independent film studio
The plan above shows that ‘the hunger games’ is the most adaptable film to compare to another film with being able to expand and explain on a point made. Choice being narrative or representation? The escape plan or mortal instruments?

my re-check research on my chosen films to compare to the hunger games happened to be independent and as they are new this year they were not listed in my previous research most likely because the websites had not been updated yet.

possible films to compare to the hunger games through genre:
-pirates of the caribbean: the curse of the black pearl
-transformers
-snowhite and the huntsmen
-sucker punch

possible films to compare to the escape plan through genre:
-white house down
-hansel and gretel
-21 jump street
-inception
-the bourne identity
-the departed

the bourne identity and shutter island??? << cant be done as they are both hollywood

THE ESCAPE PLAN AND THE DEPARTED << THRILLER GENRE << HAVE A MAN WORKING AGAINST THEM
THE ESCAPE PLAN - PRODUCED BY SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT >> INDEPENDENT
THE DEPARTED - PRODUCED BY WARNER BROTHERS >> HOLLYWOOD
THE ESCAPE PLAN = MAN'S BOSS PAYS ALOT OF MONEY TO MAKE SURE HE STAYS IN PRISON
THE DEPARTED = ????

Decided:
THE HUNGER GAMES AND SNOWHITE AND THE HUNTSMEN << THRILLER GENRE << REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN AS STRONG AND INDEPENDENT
THE HUNGER GAMES - PRODUCED BY LIONSGATE PRODUCTIONS >> INDEPENDENT
SNOWHITE AND THE HUNTSMEN - PRODUCED BY UNIVERSAL PICTURES >> HOLLYWOOD
THE HUNGER GAMES = SHE FIGHTS FOR FREEDOM AND HER LIFE - CAPITOL
SNOWHITE AND THE HUNTSMEN = SHE FIGHTS FOR FREEDOM AND HER LIFE - THE EVIL QUEEN

This shows that the most independent films I have seen are majority in the last 10 years but the classics I have watched outside of that year gap, I cannot use as they are not within the restrictions.

Options for independent film: highlighted ones to chose from
