What qualifies a film as being a flop at the box office?
Doesn't earn back more than it's budget
What qualifies a film as being a success in the box office?
Has to make double it's budget
Similarities: Fantasies, Science fiction, Sets to be made- not set in today's world, CGI, Hollywood, franchise (business), pre existing fan bases, big names - stars, heavily advertised, formulaic- CHN
Advertising can be equal to production budget or half of the budget

Why are Hollywood films so formulaic?
Everything has already been done and if to make a new idea it would be so obscure which would be a big risk which means they might not get the profit back from the demographic- can't afford the risk
Piracy means an unfair result on what film are popular
The companies are so amazed by CGI and the huge fan base they got out of it that it means they use that as a distraction from the storyline

If it is computer animated which means it is easy to steal

3D brings people back into the cinema

People nowadays can read reviews

The context that affects the making of and the getting out there of and the experience of watching cinema

1975-2014- films in the UK

Opinion >> argument

Half term: half term homework: prep for mock exam 1 week 1
Task 1, task 2, task 3, task 4
Case study- advertising, marketing and promotion
Record review of film- pitch version of next blockbuster

Film flop formula????
A list star
Not a comedy
CGI- eye catching visuals
Needs to make double the amount the budget was
Needs a newsworthy budget

Comedy and horror films have lower budgets
Remakes that cost more does not mean that the audience will enjoy it more

Apply to blockbuster release

Track the film flop formula in the film

Justify the influence

A listers salary and VFX are a big expense of money

The more people that go to the cinema = success

X men
Changed actors and actresses of certain characters
Brought in more stars
High budget scenes are included in the trailer

Jaws
Doesn't show the shark

Hype is the link between the trailers
